Lead and supporting actor Charles Grodin is often cast in comedic roles as "the perfect jerk." He became interested in acting while still a teenager. After college he studied drama with Uta Hagen and Lee Strasberg, then began performing at the Pacific Playhouse. His Broadway debut was in Tchin-Tchin (1962) with Anthony Quinn, while he debuted onscreen in Sex and the College Girl (1964); he appeared in only one more movie, however, during the '60s. His first lead was in The Heartbreak Kid (1972), directed by his friend and mentor Elaine May. He has had a fairly busy screen career since then, meanwhile acting and directing for the stage. He passed over the chance to play the role Richard Dreyfuss accepted in the mega-hit Jaws (1974) because he was directing the Broadway play Thieves; later he appeared in the film version of that play (1977). He has tended to play supporting roles, a notable exception being in the smash hit comedy Beethoven (1992) and its sequel (1993). He is the author of an autobiography, It Would Be So Nice If You Weren't Here, and began hosting his own self-titled talk show in 1995.
