Iben Hjejle
Birthday:
Birthplace:
Copenhagen, Denmark
Danish actress Iben Hjejle attained international recognition for her performances in Søren Kragh-Jacobsen's 1999 film Mifune (inspired by the back-to-basics Dogma 95 filmmaking style) and Stephen Frears' enthusiastically received 2000 screen adaptation of Nick Hornby's High Fidelity. Born in Copenhagen on March 22, 1971, Hjejle studied acting at the State Theatre School of Denmark. She was discovered by director Niels Arden Oplev, who cast her in both his 1991 short Naked and his 1996 feature Portland, the latter of which cast the actress as a young woman who takes up with a violent ex-con. Three years later, Hjejle scored a critical breakthrough with her portrayal of a prostitute turned housekeeper in Mifune, winning a Jury Special Mention for her work at the 1999 Berlin Film Festival. After another lead that same year, in the horror film Besat, Hjejle won a starring role in High Fidelity, her first English-language film. Her portrayal of Laura, the lawyer girlfriend of the film's protagonist (John Cusack), earned a positive reception that was nicely complemented by the acclaim surrounding the film as a whole. Despite this generous boost to her screen career, Hjejle has continued to act on Danish television and as a member of Copenhagen's Ostre Gasvaerk Theatre.

Quotes from Iben Hjejle's Characters
Laura: | In fact, I hope we're not in love anymore, to be honest. It would give me a better opinion of love right now. |
Rob Gordon: | Come on! What, did I beat you? Did I tell you you were a bad person? I mean, what the fuck? What shoul I have done to make you happy? |
Rob Gordon: | Come on! What, did I beat you? Did I tell you you were a bad person? I mean, what the fuck? What should I have done to make you happy? |
Laura: | Nothing. Make yourself happy. |
Rob Gordon: | Oh, I see. Um, wh-why am I not happy? |
Laura: | Because you're the same person you used to be.. and I'm not. |
Lena Morelle: | When you see a ghost, something very interesting happens. Your brain splits in two. One side of you is rejecting what you're seeing, because it doesn't tally with our ordinary idea of reality. And the other side is screaming,"But this is real." And in that moment itself reality is collapsed and reconfigured in a way that changes you profoundly, although you're not aware of it. |

Rob Gordon: | I'm tired of the fantasy, because it doesn't really exist. And there are never really any surprises, and it never really... |
Laura: | Delivers? |
Rob Gordon: | Delivers. And I'm tired of it. And I'm tired of everything else for that matter. But I don't ever seem to get tired of you, so... |
Laura: | Listen, Rob, would you have sex with me? Because I want to feel something else than this. It either that, or I go home and put my hand in the fire. Unless you want to stub cigarettes out on my arm. |
Rob Gordon: | No. I only have a few left, I've been saving them for later. |
Laura: | Right. It'll have to be sex, then. |
Rob Gordon: | Right. Right. |
