Like many American screenwriters who concentrated on serials, Joe Poland started out in the Western field. Poland's first screen credit came about in 1923; his last was in 1952. Busiest at Republic in the 1940s, he contributed to the general excitement of such memorable serials as The Adventures of Captain Marvel (1940), The Perils of Nyoka (1942), Secret Service in Darkest Africa (1943), Tiger Woman (1944), and The Purple Monster Strikes (1945). When the market for serials began drying up in the early '50s, Joe Poland returned to Westerns; the last of these was 1952's Canyon Ambush.
