In films since the early sound era, Maston Williams mainly portrayed scruffy-looking, often bearded henchmen in B-Westerns and was especially active at Republic Pictures from 1936 to 1941. Although never under contract, Williams turned up in quite a few Three Mesqueteers oaters and was equally visible in the studio's many action serials, usually playing less than desirable specimens named Red or Slim. But despite his hard work, Republic on more than one occasion managed to misspell his first name as "Matson" in the onscreen credits!
