Pat Murphy is one of Ireland's more prominent filmmakers; two of her notable projects include Maeve (1981) and Anne Devlin (1984). She began directing while still enrolled in a London art school. Her first film was the short Rituals of Memory (1977). Maeve is an interesting film because it uses an experimental narrative form to chronicle the feelings of alienation experienced by the female protagonist as she deals with her place in a patriarchial nation. Anne Devlin looks back at the place of women in 19th-century Ireland. Unlike Maeve, it utilizes traditional narrative to tell its story.
