A contract player at Columbia Pictures (1938-1942), dark-haired young supporting actor Richard Fiske (born Potts) turned up in a wide variety of films, including Three Stooges and Andy Clyde comedy shorts and no less than eight William Elliott B-Westerns. Fiske and Elliott worked well together, especially in their last vehicle, Across the Sierras (1941), in which they play childhood friends. When an embittered Fiske joins a gang of outlaws, the two old friends have a showdown and both actors contribute to an honest, believable scene that belies the film's low-budget origins. Fiske, sadly, was one of several Hollywood actors to perish in active duty during World War II.
