Was born by emergency caesarean section during which she and her mother almost died. Launched her career in 1995 when Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss modelled her clothes at her graduation from London's Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design. In 2016, launched her first menswear collection consisting of "athleisure", pyjama-like casual outfits, for which she said her father had provided inspiration. In 2017, guested on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs and her choices included Blackbird by the Beatles and her favourite, God Only Knows, by the Beach Boys. In 2018, decided to buy out Kering's (formerly Gucci Group) share of her company after 17 years of partnership. Designed Meghan Markle's wedding reception dress and later created 46 copies, each priced at 3,500. In 2018, launched the Stella McCartney Cares Foundation, a charity dedicated to breast cancer, a disease which killed her mother at the age of 56.
