Nickname is "Skarzie." Has appeared in a number of Danish director Lars von Trier films' including Breaking the Waves (1996) and Dogville (2003). Years after working together on Zero Kelvin (1995) and Aberdeen (2000), he teamed again with friend and director Hans Petter Moland to portray a man released from prison in the dark comedy A Somewhat Gentle Man (2009). Cast in the comic book film Thor (2011); his son, actor Alexander Skarsgard, was once considered for the title role. Close friends with Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly, who named their son Stellan.
