Best known for his contributions to the iconic CBS news magazine 60 Minutes, Steve Kroft initiated his career as a local reporter for television stations in Jacksonville, FL; Miami, FL; and Syracuse, NY. Kroft graduated to the national news at age 34, when CBS News brought him on board as a correspondent for their northeast bureau in Manhattan; he subsequently moved to the Dallas bureau from January 1981 through May 1983, then to the CBS Miami bureau, then received a promotion as one of the network's main foreign correspondents. Kroft signed on as reporter on the CBS news magazine West 57th from 1987 through 1989, and moved to 60 Minutes that year in the wake of Diane Sawyer's departure. His memorable pieces on that program include bits on Woody Allen (amid the director's custody battle with Mia Farrow), Saddam Hussein, and global terrorism.
