British director Thomas Bentley specialized in adapting the works of Charles Dickens for motion pictures. He was formally trained as an engineer, but moved to vaudeville in 1901 where he was best known for his interpretations of famed Dickens characters. He began directing films in 1910 and continued to do so through 1941. He became a technical advisor to the British Film Council in 1945.
