Georgia-born Vincent Sherman, a graduate of Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, was a stage actor before coming to the screen in 1933 in Counselor-At-Law. He became a screenwriter later in the '30s, and joined the Warner Bros. directorial staff in 1939, initially on westerns and later as a specialist in serious drama. Although he always stood in the shadow of figures such as Michael Curtiz and John Huston, Sherman occasionally showed flashes of inspiration that were very special, most notably in the thriller All Through the Night (1942), the drama The Hasty Heart (1950), and the crime thriller The Garment Jungle (1957). He was still working in the '70s, making television features.
