Former newspaperman William Slavens McNutt made the transition to screenwriter with 1926's The Quarterback. Employed by Paramount in the early 1930s, McNutt made significant contributions to that studio's brace of Mark Twain adaptations, Tom Sawyer (1930) and Huckleberry Finn (1931). He went on to share Academy Award nominations for Lady and Gent (1932) and Charge of the Bengal Lancers (1935), his last film. Reportedly, William Slavens McNutt also directed a handful of Paramount short subjects.
