Movie Info

This is a routine Disney comedy-fantasy about a boy who turns into a large sheep dog at the most inopportune moments. That is assuming there would be opportune moments. Young Wilby Daniels (Tommy Kirk) finds a magic ring that used to belong to the Borgia family. When he pronounces an inscription on the ring, he is suddenly able to transform himself into a shaggy dog -- though he has no control over when this is going to happen. To his dismay, the girl he likes gets involved without knowing who the dog really is. At the same time, the only way Wilby can break the spell is to perform some virtuous deed. Fortunately for him, a few Soviet spies are just hanging around, waiting to be uncovered by a canine. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Unhappily, Producer Walt Disney tells his shaggy-dog story so doggedly that he soon runs it into the pound.

There are a good many laughs on this simple premise and the script's exploitation of them.

Brisk but unrewarding.

This 1959 film was Disney's first live-action comedy; it isn't good, but it's certainly mythic.

Although played very broadly for what the industry calls bellylaffs, it adds up to an enjoyable family show.

A lovable mutt of a classic comedy.

Audience Reviews for The Shaggy Dog

It's a fun, and witty children's film. But it can't even pull off the simplest of dialogue, or the funniest of comedy. Even in the simpler time when it was produced. It's a lost classic, that Walt Disney would roll in his grave for.

Fun while it lasts...but quite cheesy as well.

Really odd, but it's harmless and fun. It's kind've funny in the sense that its just a bizarre plot, no one in there right mind would write something about a man turning into a dog. Then there's the car that runs on grass and a dog driving it, completely worth the movie.
