Though Kathy Bates and Furlong's acting is decent, there is no reason to see this inspirational saga on the big screen; in scope and goal, it's a suitable TV Movie of the Week.

This situation, set in the 1950s, could be the set-up for a sitcom, or a retread of an old Disney family yarn. It ends up being a lot more, partly because Kathy Bates brings a solid, no-nonsense clarity to what could have been a marshmallow role.

The film is really a celebration of the resilience of the American family.

De-press-ing drama of Kathy Bates and her starving family trying to survive.

March 2, 2008 | Rating: 3/5

Offers a flinty portrait of a single mother of six, who is one-of-a-kind.

July 12, 2003 | Full Review…

Needlessly corny...a manipulative melodrama that wastes the presence of a fine actress such as Bates...Furlong's brooding becomes rather tedious in Bill's drowsy dud

Audience Reviews for A Home of Our Own

"Kathy Bates plays Frances Lacey, a strong willed woman who takes care of her in her own way with no pitty or charity allowed. I admired this character. She was independant (maybe to a fault) and took care of her family the best way she knew how. She made plenty mistakes and sometimes treated her eldest most unfairly, but she loved hard. Her strong minded will sometimes over looked what was best for her children at times. I can understand that having a home for your kids is most important. But also allowing them to be kids is just as important. She of course learns that later on and even softens up and allows people to help her. I enjoyed the movie and thought the ending was satisfying. I love Kathy Bates and she always does a great job in any film she's in."

This movie is too depressing.

Good drama story of a single mother and her six kids move into an abandoned farmhouse in Idaho, making a deal with the owner to fix it up and eventually buy it from him. There is a crisis every ten minutes, and not much happens that you haven't seen before, but the actors carry the film, especially Edward Furlong and Clarissa Lessig as the two older children.
