In Love and War (1996)

Critic Consensus: Formulaic and trite, In Love and War unconvincingly recreates Ernest Hemingway's early life with all the stuffy tropes that the author would have excised in a second draft.

Critic Reviews for In Love and War

All Critics (27) | Top Critics (8)

In Love and War is not much interested in Ernest Hemingway's subsequent life and career, and even in its treatment of this early period, it doesn't deal with themes such as his macho posturing, his need to prove himself, his grandiosity.

In Love and War is at its best photographing stationary objects, such as architecture, trees and bedridden soldiers -- not exactly what one hopes for from a movie portraying such a vital force as Ernest Hemingway.

I will cherish my memory of Chris at the end of In Love and War, bearded and bitter, drinking fiercely and trying very hard to be dark and tormented.

Boring and artificial

Before you can say 'gangrene,' the two fall for each other, but everyone knows that historical romances released in December are never destined to end happily.

The movie, based on the book Hemingway in Love and War, moves at a lanquid pace that never stirs the emotions.

Audience Reviews for In Love and War

Very frustrating how people fall in lust, mistake it for love, screw up their lives and then let bitterness and anger control them. What a depressing movie.

Good cast. Heartwarming movie about love during WWI. Chris plays a young Ernest Hemingway who falls for an older nurse during the war.
