The Losers (2010)

Critic Consensus: The Losers is loud, fast, and unrelentingly violent -- but it's also funny and well-acted, which will make all the difference for some action fans.

Movie Info

Director Sylvain White adapts the Vertigo comic about a team of mercenaries who wage war on the CIA after they're double-crossed in the field and left to die. Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Jensen (Chris Evans), Roque (Idris Elba), Pooch (Columbus Short), and Cougar (Óscar Jaenada) were on a black-ops mission in the Bolivian jungle when rogue CIA agent Max (Jason Patric) hung them out to dry. After beating the odds and surviving their ordeal, the team decides to strike back against Max even if it means sacrificing their own lives to do so. Aiding them on their treacherous suicide mission is sexy operative Aisha (Zoe Saldana), who has her own reasons for wanting to see Max get his just deserts. But getting to Max won't be easy, because in addition to having the CIA on his side, he's about to spark a war that could plunge the entire globe into chaos. Their time quickly running out as Max's plan kicks into overdrive, the Special Forces unit that everyone assumed dead arms themselves to the teeth and prepares to strike back with a vengeance. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

If you're looking for a mindless, fun summer flick, check this one out. Otherwise, it's okay to pass this one by in the video store.

Just endless stunts. Dispiriting.

June 3, 2010 | Rating: 2/5

Only the strangely coy approach to violence (deaths are nearly all offscreen), leaves an odd aftertaste, but not enough to taint the big dumb fun.

It's like being given the finger for 90 minutes.

The Losers is a ho-hum scraping of the comic-book barrel, which feels particularly needless with both The A-Team and The Expendables on their way.

Seldom do you see a film title that doubles as a likely box office prediction. But that's precisely what we've got with The Losers.

Audience Reviews for The Losers

Shallow but highly entertaining action flick that is fully aware of its own ridiculousness and has fun with it, personified in Chris Evan's character. Whenever there is too much slow motion or cool guys walking away from explosions the film makes you groan, but then there is always a fun scene to make up for it. Guilty pleasure entertainment, but entertainment none the less.

This loosely-based DC Comic has stylized action that's a good vibe throughout the film, but falters on several occasions. The Losers' fast-paced tempo doesn't allow the audience to fully grasp the background of each character. The overall simplification and predictability of the script also is a let-down with an uninspiring and somewhat nixed-chemistry amongst characters, although it does have a decent twist to the story. Overall, the film is an excitement that you'd only want experience once and only once. 2.5/5

A special ops team is betrayed and left for dead by a corrupt CIA operative, so they join forces with a mysterious terrorist to avenge themselves and clear their name. The Losers is a comic strip action film featuring the old "mercs with conscience" premise that will never win any awards for originality, but it is done with enough charm and tongue in cheek humour to make for an enjoyably mindless popcorn movie that is a pleasant enough way to wile away an hour and a half. The cast are all likeable and have decent chemistry, particularly Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Hannibal-alike and the action sequences are suitably explosive and fun. Playing out a little like a military version of the Ocean's films it doesn't have the tasteless violence and testosterone of the similar The Expendables and despite some sketchy CGI and occasionally juvenile humour it actually makes a far better A-Team film than The A-Team did. Forgettable but fun.
