Movie Info

Set near the end of WW II, this powerful drama, based on a story by John Hersey, centers upon a harsh but decent American Army major who is stationed with a small troop in the Italian village of Adano and assigned to help the burg re-establish its former leaders and get back on its feet. Most of the impoverished residents are starving and so the major's first task is to get them fed, to win their trust and restore their flagging spirits. He is assisted by a gentle orderly and a former Italian POW. As he and the residents slowly form a bond, he finds himself falling in love with a beautiful local girl.
