... charming tale about family, culture, and inclusion.
A Boy Called Sailboat is never less than likable, but a little more variance in its beats might have prevented it from settling into a well-worn groove of unrelenting whimsy.
There are several aspects of it that I did thoroughly enjoy, notably the picturesque cinematography, the script and the children.
A cute kid composes and plays a song that moves people profoundly in a very small movie that might turn the same trick for viewers who never get to listen to the tune at all.
It's a special kind of film that can rely on children to drive its story and maintain its charm, but A Boy Called Sailboat pulls it off, evading some of the pitfalls of the quirky indie comedy to deliver something truly wonderful.
A Boy Called Sailboat is an astonishingly assured debut narrative film, managing to be heartwarming but not overly cloying, visually striking without seeming like a formal exercise, thoughtful but probably not too complicated for kids to understand.
Audience Reviews for A Boy Called Sailboat
A whimsical bit of whimsy as a found item leads to significant changes in the lives of all who come across it. The fairy tale element increases the acceptance of the fantasy premise even if the underlying message is kinda watery. A nice family picture, for the whole family.
