For me it works not only as a reasonable adaptation of an Orwell novel I like, but also as a form of escapism, since if the truth be known I would be happy as a clerk in a London used-book store. For a time.

A Merry War is decently acted (Grant is amusingly curdled, Bonham Carter is sensible and efficient even when she's lying in a damp field in her underwear), but as filmmaking, it's too staid to make much of an impression.

A Merry War is about the most important education of all - the education of the heart.

The enthralling movie has broad appeal from Dilbert fans to romantics.

Grant is superb as the irksome but redeemable Gordon.

The uninspired script makes a mockery of Orwell's intentions to sympathize with an artist who is prepared to make his own way in the world.
