Frank's film is much more of a noir outing than a straight action feature, and Neeson slips right into the tone and feel of the hard-boiled detective offering.
As a throwback to a type of nasty, ugly crime film of yesteryear, A Walk Among the Tombstones cleans up.
As nauseating as the film's inventive sadisms can be, Frank succeeds far more in the details than in the larger picture that tries to relate this world to ours.
While we're waiting for the release of Taken 3, the man who was Oskar Schindler is keeping us in an action hero frame of mind with the moody-but-essentially-empty A Walk Among the Tombstones.
It's odd to find a movie in which drug traffickers are, if not good guys, at least sympathetic victims of crimes that are even worse.
For all its slick contemporary surface and fashionably nasty trimmings it's really a throwback to the age of 1940s noir.

A bit of a homage (in a good way) to noir as Neeson fleshes out a husk of a man playing at being a private detective on a case he doesn't want, for people he doesn't like. It's a better film than the other reviews here would indicate, and a damn sight better than those Taken films.

Taking place in a pre-9/11 NYC, this conventional and unsurprising thriller seems dated like a revival of the TV series Millennium (despite its great cinematography), and even the juxtaposition of freeze-framed action with a voice-over about the 12 steps of AA feels bland and arbitrary.

A forgettable noir concerning a veteran, beat-up detective (Liam Neeson) who takes on a case of a missing woman in New York City for a wealthy drug kingpin. While Neeson is his regular outstanding self, the rest of the supporting cast is desperately lacking. Overall, this movie just feels like an extended version of a "Law and Order" episode, due to its relentlessly dour and dark subject matter and cold, calculated plot line. Unfortunately, this is just a very predictable movie that does not offer a lot of surprises, and that is why it is completely missable.
