Movie Info

Frank X. Farrell (Joe E. Brown), the new pitcher for the Chicago Cubs, is a terrific player, but just can't seem to tell the truth. When his teammates tease him about falling in love with Dolly Stevens (Olivia de Havilland), sister of Bess (Ruth Donnelly), who's married to Cubs coach Cap (William Frawley), Frank denies it, leading the angry Do to walk out on their engagement. Crooked gamblers threaten to break Frank's arm unless he arranges to lose the next two games, but he's so distraught over Dolly's departure that he legitimately loses the next one. Cap thinks he lost on purpose, but Bess knows better, so she meets with Dolly in hopes of straightening things out -- but then the gamblers kidnap Frank.

It all builds up into a fairly sturdy plot.

Audience Reviews for Alibi Ike

Good showcase for Joe E. Brown is a silly bit of nonsense. Olivia was just starting out and has little to do but looks beautiful. The kind of lightweight piffle the studios churned out on a regular basis in the 30's to fill a double bill with a big budget picture.
