Movie Info

For fifteen-year-old Ruthie Carmichael and her young mother, Rita, life has never been stable. Fleeing Rita's latest boyfriend, they find themselves living out of their beat-up car, and heading east in search of a better life. When money runs out and their car breaks down, they become stranded in a small town where Rita ultimately lands a steady job waitressing at Tiny's, a local diner where they begin to develop a family: tender-hearted Marty, the owner of the diner, and Pam, a transgender waitress with big dreams who becomes Ruthie's closest friend.

Even in a rote story, with prosaic direction from Holmes, the lead performances ring true.

With her well-meaning desire to create an inspirational story of survival and redemption, Holmes has kept the entire film extremely low-stakes.

December 9, 2016 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…

A well-meaning but formulaic movie with not enough time to transcend predictable clichés.

December 8, 2016 | Full Review…

Every plot turn plays as either a little too convenient, too uncharacteristic, or too undercooked.

December 8, 2016 | Full Review…

The movie is overloaded with capital-D drama, from Mark Consuelos ludicrous role as a Rita's bad boyfriend to the typical drug and discipline platitudes that face Ruth in high school.

December 8, 2016 | Rating: C | Full Review…

Although well-acted and well-intended, offers little that's new, exciting or meaty enough to warrant revisiting that subgenre of movies involving flighty single moms on the move with their steadier daughters.

Audience Reviews for All We Had

Katie Holmes takes an interesting Boone script and crafts a somewhat slow but surprisingly good film. The pacing is very slow but the events are quite solid and I lived through some of the events depicted, housing crash. Katie Holmes gives a very central performance and one I have never seen from her. The slow pace may put others off but I like these types of drama films and the relationship between the mother and daughter is the glue holding this one together. Great Netflix discovery and another underrated discovery. 13-05-2017.
