Movie Info

Mental patients in love form the basis of this grim Australian romance. Kate and Harry first met in Dr. Norberg's psychiatric classes. Both are quite disturbed, and have lived tumultuous lives as they endeavor to cope with their inner turmoil and the bureaucracy involved in their treatment. Kate lives all alone while Harry is supported by his brother Morris and his earthy wife Louise. But despite all their past and present troubles, Harry and Kate fall passionately in love and enjoy a fleeting respite of peace and happiness together. Still both Morris and Louise are worried when Harry announces that he and Kate are going to move into a small apartment together. Though they have misgivings, Morris and Louise give the couple their blessing and do all they can to help out. Unfortunately, the happiness of Harry and Kate is short-lived. The trouble begins when Kate gets pregnant and the doctors, concerned over her precarious mental state, suggest that she not have the baby. Believing that she has been chosen by the angel "Astral," who talks to her through TV game show contestants, to bear this holy child, Kate staunchly refuses to have an abortion.

While attacking his story's themes a bit more realistically than most such films, writer-director Michael Rymer nonetheless overplays his hand.
