A riotous comedy in the body of a Technicolor nightmare, the film arrives with thunderous, uncompromising energy that only lets up when Chorkri decides to veer into the phantasmagorical.
It's such an endearingly, refreshingly weird satire that, out of all the Midnight titles at Sundance this year, it feels the most destined for cult status.
The film is based on screenwriter Catherine Léger's play, and perhaps the herky-jerk structure works on stage. On screen, however, it just feels undisciplined...
Intrusive stylistic choices prove to be major a hindrance in this scattershot satire of both the male gaze and male rehabilitation, despite the fair efforts of a game cast.
A riff on the Mary Poppins legend, although I don't remember that movie including any dream sequences involving dildos.
The film gleefully circumvents all obvious didactic arguments about misogyny and men's role in the oppression of women by emphasising the lived-in experience of its characters.
