Before We Go (2015)

Critic Consensus: Chris Evans' directorial debut is modest to a fault, with a threadbare story and minimal style leaving his and Alice Eve's likable performances adrift in New York City with nowhere to go.

Critic Reviews for Before We Go

All Critics (30) | Top Critics (14)

While this kind of tale is a fantasy for the movies, with an emphasis on realism in style and deliberately paced story, "Before We Go" suggests that it really can happen, even just for a fleeting moment.

September 14, 2015 | Rating: 3/4

Slight and familiar but sweet enough for Saturday night, Before We Go is the umpteenth re-up of Brief Encounter, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Very little here is special, despite the individual charms of Evans and co-star Alice Eve.

The whole effort seems to run solely on the smiles of its photogenic leads. And, frankly, the smiles routinely dissipate any perceived tension.

Before We Go is a nice enough effort, a little movie with a big heart.

Audience Reviews for Before We Go

Inconsistent is the best word to describe Before We Go. The script is full of cliches and plot holes, the chemistry between the two leads is shaky, and the final 20 minutes feel rushed. That being said, there are some redeeming qualities in play. Chris Evans shines in the lead role, even though he has to drag Alice Eve's lifeless performance and inconsistent accent along the way. There are also moments when his touch as a director really shines. The cinematography in the subway really stood out to me as bringing the city to life. I hope he gives directing another shot with a stronger script. All-in-all, unless you're obsessed with Chris Evans or just want to watch a romance regardless of quality, don't waste your time with this one.

While it feels very much like the "Before Trilogy" that was so beautifully created by writer-director Richard Linklater, "Before We Go" stars Chris Evans (Nick) and Alice Eve (Brooke) as they spend a night on the town together, looking for her purse and trying to raise money to get her home. As her marriage may be in jeopardy, Brooke has her purse stolen as she is about to get on a train and race her husband home. She happens to run into a subway musician who will make it his goal to get her home. The film plays out like one long hangout on the town that sparks a real connection between the two. Films like this heavily rely on the chemistry between the two lead actors/actresses, and I must say, they made me love these characters from start to finish. I will say that this premise has been done many time and the dialogue is nothing new, but the cast really makes it work. I believe this to be a criminally underrated indie film that is deifnitely worth your time.
