Critic Reviews for Beyond the Law

All Critics (6) | Top Critics (3)

[Beyond the Law] is a pretty inept movie. But it is funny at times, and interesting if only because Mailer reveals so much of his glorious ego.

Unfortunately, Mailer's brand of minimal movie-making remains more interesting to talk around than to talk about. It is not for me to tell him what to do with his time and money, but I can't help wishing aloud that would stop making movies.

The encounters are so vivid and violent and -- occasionally -- moving that unless you're member of the Mailer Mob, which I'm not, it's impossible to tell the "real" actors from the "false."

Mailer's Beyond the Law has a zillion little irritations, but it has authentic scurrility and funk before it goes sour with Mailer's Irish brogue monologue.

Without thinking it to be in any way a masterpiece, I find Mailer's movie pretty sharp, a probing into the role of the police in contemporary society.

Despite being improvised, it feels scripted and the actors act as though there was a method to their work, rather than "The Method."
