Blind (2015)

Critic Consensus: A beautifully composed drama whose narrative intricacy is matched by its depth, Blind sounds an ambitious note of triumph for writer-director Eskil Vogt.

Movie Info

Eskil Vogt's experimental seriocomedy Blind stars Ellen Dorrit Petersen as Ingrid - a blind Norwegian woman wed to husband Morten (Henrik Rafaelsen) and residing in contemporary Oslo. Despite his apparent fidelity to her, she grows neurotic and then paranoid about his activities outside of their apartment. During her long, empty hours alone, she begins to develop very specific, fear-ridden ideas about what he is up to, which she pours wholeheartedly into the stories that she's typing out on her keyboard. In time, the tales take on a life of their own, and Ingrid assumes a kind of godlike role, freely (and humorously) manipulating both her husband, and the characters who she imagines weaving in and out of his life.

Riddling in cinema can have diminishing returns.

It's a fascinating exploration of the things that can thrive in the soil of a jealous mind, fertilized by suspicion and a lack of sight.

With heightened sounds and Petersen's assured performance, Blind evocatively depicts the small triumphs and frustrating defeats of Ingrid's daily existence.

Despite its heady eroticism, it maintains an almost clinical detachment that engages your mind without making your heart leap.

This is a haunting puzzle of a movie, one to pick at, to unpeel, to see a second time through eyes that have adjusted to it.

September 1, 2015 | Full Review…

Unfortunately, the film's occasionally thrilling visual sleight-of-hand comes at the ultimate service of a boilerplate early-mid-life-crisis drama.

Audience Reviews for Blind

It's a clever idea and beautifully made, but it feels like a short story stretched to 90 minutes.

An absorbing narrative exercise that plays with our perception of reality as it makes us see things from the perspective of its blind protagonist's imagination, but it may also prove too unemotional an experience for some to care about unreal characters and situations.
