Critic Reviews for Calibre
Excellently shot and acted, and gutsy enough to not cop out when it counts, Calibre is one of the year's best genre efforts.
Feels simultaneously familiar and fresh, just like a good, solid bout of genre-tweaking should do.
Calibre [has] a pungent, intriguing layer of ambiguity that only sharpens the acute pain of the awful events so skillfully depicted.
Ben Baird's sound design, meanwhile, is a thing of fretful beauty, seamlessly meshing a barrage of natural effects with Anne Nikitin's creaking, squeaking, screeching score.
Palmer adeptly creates a suffocating atmosphere, all glowering wood-panelled walls which seem to close in, and defeated-looking hunting trophies.
Audience Reviews for Calibre
Matt Palmer has crafted one of the best thrillers of the year. Calibre is the perfect example how Netflix is capturing a market that has long been forgotten by Hollywood. This is one of the most uncomfortable films to watch, it oozes with atmosphere and succeeds with the talent behind the camera. I really hope they stage a sequel to overcome that ending, but Palmer should distance himself and move on to bigger things. The key to the film is the lead chemistry of the actors and the supporting cast. Netflix has purchased well here and I hope they continue to provide interesting thrillers like this. This is where Netflix will succeed, not the giant Hollywood style films they attempt, e.g. Bright. 25/12/2018.
