Cargo (2018)

Critic Consensus: Cargo takes a refreshingly character-driven approach to the zombie genre that's further distinguished by its Australian setting and Martin Freeman's terrific lead performance.

Susie Porter, Anthony Hayes and David Gulpilil are among the excellent supporting cast in an uncommonly thoughtful spin on the genre.

It's actually very powerful.

Cargo's big drawcard is its sheer humanity. There's a lot of tragedy on show here, and you'll have to be made of stern stuff indeed to make it through this outback odyssey without a few tears.

Cargo doesn't often satisfy on the genre's more sensational vectors. There are no hordes, few gouts of creative gore and a limited sense of danger.

Cargo, in common with the best zombie films, is not really about voracious bloodsuckers; it's about the degradation of the environment, racism and the importance of family.

Perhaps the highest compliment I can pay it is that I think George A. Romero himself would have liked it.

Audience Reviews for Cargo

Had kind of hoped for more, but this is okay. Cargo isn't exactly like any other zombie deal out there though, so if your demands are low enough, there's some value.

Freeman is the only reason I bothered to view this film and I'm happy to say he is again, the best part of a typical movie. I had issues with the filmmakers choices, mainly using tired character troupes and not exploring supporting players. I liked the film, but they could have created an indie film that was full of depth and not like a standard created studio film. The zombie concept is interesting and sadly not that explored, not a bad thing though. Freeman is the key to the success of the film and without him this would have disappeared on the Netflix platform. Good, but not a great drama/horror hybrid. 13/12/2018

Decent zombie thriller that doesn't add much to the genre but the fascinating setting of the australian outback. The plot has pretty unsettling and uncomfortable parts, but only little gore or action. Instead, an infected father's search for a safe harbor for his infant is character driven and relies on the atmosphere and the setting. That works and is entertaining enough, but considering the protagonists fate is sealed from early on it's not exactly a nail biter.
