For ail its grace, Carrington is a superficial treatment of an urbane but obscure bunch

Even those unfamiliar with Strachey's biographies may be fascinated by Jonathan Pryce's impersonation of him in Carrington.
This is Hampton's impressive debut as a director; he tells his story with a tactful English reserve that allows deep feelings to find their own way to the surface. He's given a great assist from Michael Nyman's score.
We feel a tingle of anticipation that this picture is going to be handled intelligently. And it is.
The leads do physically resemble their real-life prototypes, judging from last year's coffee-table book on Carrington's art and personal circle. But the snail's pacing, vague writing and Thompson herself leave a fatal void.
The opening scenes of Carrington try to explain the beginnings of one of the oddest romances of the Bloomsbury Group, that gathering of British geniuses, eccentrics and self-publicists that produced no romances that were not odd.
Audience Reviews for Carrington
As Strachey, Pryce is brilliant but the film seems to lack a coherent narrative. Basically we just see two sad artists be sad for two hours without ever getting a sense of what drew them together.
Super Reviewer
Not a very memorable film from Emma Thompson et al but it is one that reminds me about how lucscious she used to be. Yum Yum :)
