It carries more of a thrill than the other pictures of its sort, for there seems danger frequently and the ferocity of a tiger or leopard here and there is most realistic.

Schoedsack's camerawork is the most impressive feature in... Chang.

A vivid and thrilling film conception of man's fight for life in the Northern Siamese jungle.

Watching it is the nearest thing a 21st-century audience will get to an old-fashioned tiger hunt. It's almost like a National Geographic snuff movie. The whiff of danger is real.

It's still quite entertaining, though a far cry from anything resembling serious documentary or ethnography.

Relying on obviously rehearsed scenes and plenty of staged moments, Chang is a truly fascinating example of the way in which 20s Hollywood reworked the documentary genre for the sake of creating popular entertainment.

Audience Reviews for Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness

a pseudo-documentary film made by merian c. cooper in thailand when it was still called siam, it's the story of one family's fight for survival on the edge of the jungle. cooper used actual natives and many wild animals, tho some scenes, like the finale, were staged. it's a silent film , with colorful hand-tinting in many scenes and a soundtrack of thai music. this was a sort of dry run for king kong but it's a great adventure film in it's own right. caution: animals are slaughtered
