Travis's noir is entirely watchable, but it's only because of to Ahmed's captivating presence.
Ahmed gives a stellar, attentive performance, his eyes darting about to catch the details in every scene. It's easy to miss the meticulousness of his work in a film with excessive stylistic tics.
A decent vehicle for Ahmed to show why he's considered one of Britain's most interesting young stars.
Those hungry for original British movies, especially ones that attempt to engage with multicultural London, may find their appetites whetted.
The jagged parts of this noir puzzle don't piece together to make a pleasing whole.
Too often City of Tiny Lights is let down by an overeagerness to play up its source material, and hampered by unnecessarily showy direction and inadvisable attempts at gumshoe dialogue.
