This was planned for John Belushi, who died before it could get off the ground and might have made the whole thing worth doing.
Basically consists of a wide assortment of character riffs which are offbeat enough to provide moderate moment-to-moment amusement but don't create a great deal of comic impact.
Cardiac arrest finally seizes the film, after a long case of terminal whimsy.
Proves that with the right material an intelligent director of demonstrated style and a cast of thoroughly accomplished comic actors can make as painfully witless a comedy as any knucklehead on the block.
Despite the predictability of the story, there might have been moments of mirth had director Malle been able to sustain a narrative. Since viewers don't care a whit for anyone in it, the picture implodes in its own cynicism.
