Movie Info

It is 1944 and World War II is reaching its climax. The Allies are poised to invade France and finally defeat the German army. But in Walmington-on-Sea morale amongst the Home Guard is low. Their new mission then - to patrol the Dover army base - is a great chance to revive spirits and reputation, that is until glamorous journalist Rose Winters arrives to write about their exploits, setting the pulses racing and putting the local women on red alert. MI5 then discover a radio signal sent direct to Berlin from Walmington-on-Sea. There's a spy on the loose! The outcome of the war is suddenly at stake, and it falls to our unlikely heroes to stand up and be counted.

Who do you think you are kidding, fake Dad's Army?

It was a sitcom, which is to say habitual - and since it is still frequently broadcast and enjoyed, it is with us as much as it ever was. And we don't enjoy our favourite habits being changed for us.

Oliver Parker's direction does little to lighten the tone; from the bull-in-a-field opening to the beach-bound battle finale, subtlety is not the film's strong suit.

[The cast members] have great comic timing, but this film mostly fails to make use of it.

Who wants a Dad's Army featuring bad bedroom farce and glum soul-searching?

February 4, 2016 | Full Review…

It has a strong, game cast but this is karaoke filmmaking, trading on nostalgia rather than breaking new territory. Affable but forgettable.

Audience Reviews for Dad's Army

Faithful to the original in terms of casting but the plot is overly simplistic and guessable. Saying that though it's just an enjoyable film that doesn't try to do anything it knows it isn't supposed to.
