Critic Consensus: Built from many of the same ingredients as other Nicholas Sparks tearjerkers, Dear John suffers from its cliched framework, as well as Lasse Hallstrom's curiously detached directing.

Seyfried and Tatum have tangible chemistry...
It's like a bad soap opera.

What starts as a charming anachronism %u2014 pens, paper and the postal service in an impersonal digital age %u2014 becomes tedious as Hallstrom is reduced to interminable, repetitive montages covering the many months that the pair are apart.
Tatum makes what use he can of his two expressions, Seyfried does her best to perk things up and much the best performer is Richard Jenkins...

Their romance fizzles out in their letters to each other, and the plot gets lost in the post.

A touching melodrama illuminated by a solid turn from Tatum.

Audience Reviews for Dear John
Rather beautifully photographed love story that does not entirely follow your expectations (which is both good and bad) and entertains well enough. There are nice moments and Seyfried is extremely charismatic, but ultimately nothing that happens reaches very deeply or sweeps you off your feet, really. It's for fans of such novels, I suppose.

Well goes no where just like the on screen romance! Boring as hell, wouldn't recommend!

Ooooooh nice movie!! This was a sweet love story with U-turns in the lives of the main characters that conclude in a very nice ending. Sadness abounds, but true love wins out in the end. No violence, foul language or trash in this one---just a charming love story

Savannah Curtis: | Two weeks together, that's all it took. Two weeks for me to fall in love with you. |

Mr. Tyree: | There's something I wanna tell you. After I got shot, you wanna know the very first thing that entered my mind? Before I blacked out? Coins. I'm eight years old again on a tour of the U.S. Mint. I'm listening to a guy explain how coins are made. How they're punched out of sheet metal. How they're rimmed and beveled. How they're stamped and cleaned. And how each and every batch of coin are personally examined just in case any of them slipped though with the slightest imperfection. That's what popped into my head. I'm a Coin of the United States Army. I was minted in the year 1980. I've been punched from sheet metal. I've been stamped and cleaned. My edges have been rimmed and beveled. But now I have two small holes in me. I'm no longer in perfect condition. |
John Tyree: | So there's something else I wanna tell you. Right before everything went black, you wanna know the very last thing that entered my mind? You. |
