Movie Info

A young couple lead a modest provincial existence with their small daughter. The husband is a policeman, a common middle- class civil servant. The wife stays at home and cares for their little girl, an alert and curious child, always looking up inquisitively at her mother. This beautiful, seemingly ordinary family live a frugal life of simple joys. It is also a life of increasing violence measured by the dark bruises of the police officer's wife...

Critic Reviews for Die Frau des Polizisten (The Policeman's Wife)

All Critics (13) | Top Critics (6)

This is a chilling study of domestic abuse.

August 22, 2014 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Maybe creating a study in suffering is the point.

August 21, 2014 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

Philip Gröning builds his would-be magnum opus of domestic unease in fragments. A three-hour running-time, however, means an awful lot of fragments.

August 19, 2014 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

Divided into 59 chapters but feeling more like 590, Gröning's drama is long, staccato and offers little by way of dramatic satisfaction.

August 18, 2014 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

There's next to no insight into either character as the film remains strictly in observational mode throughout, while the distancing effect of the recurring chapter headings makes it impossible for the film to obtain any kind of dramatic flow

September 14, 2013 | Full Review…

It's main problem is that Gröning promises surprises which he then fails to deliver.
