Dumb and Dumber (1994)

Critic Consensus: A relentlessly stupid comedy elevated by its main actors: Jim Carrey goes bonkers and Jeff Daniels carries himself admirably in an against-type performance.

Movie Info

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels play the title roles (though viewers may find themselves debating which is which) in this genially low-brow comedy. Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) are two intellectually-challenged best friends who share an apartment so messy that gangsters aren't sure how to trash the place; the guys also have a certain problem (not difficult to understand) holding on to jobs. Lloyd is working as a limo driver in Rhode Island when he picks up a beautiful and wealthy woman named Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly) who is being taken to the airport. Lloyd immediately falls head over heels in love with Mary, and when she leaves a briefcase at the airport, he's determined to return it in hopes of impressing her. Lloyd isn't able to get aboard Mary's flight (though not for lack of trying). Harry has a van decorated to look like a dog (to promote his failing dog-grooming business), and the pair hop in the Poochmobile to find Mary in Aspen. What Lloyd and Harry don't know is that the briefcase is full of money, which Mary deliberately left at the airport as a ransom payment to save the life of her kidnapped husband. Incidentally, Lloyd's chipped front tooth happens to be real; while Jim Carrey had the injured tooth capped many years ago, he thought a broken smile would suit Lloyd's character and had the cap removed for the duration of filming. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Critic Reviews for Dumb and Dumber

What makes this fantasy of anti-social behaviour so painfully funny, is the gulf between etiquette and vulgarity, the desire to be a child whooping it up in the adult world.

You cannot deny a laugh, and Dumb and Dumber has plenty.

The plot, of course, is merely an excuse for an endless series of gags, and the percentage of them that score is fairly high.

[Featrues] a plethora of memorable scenes.

Dumb and Dumber, which features Carrey and Jeff Daniels as nitwits traveling cross-country, is a frayed string of gags posing as a movie. Carrey, though, does literal-minded doofdom with peerless enthusiasm.

April 28, 2008 | Rating: B-

The wholeheartedness of this descent into crude and rude humor is so good-natured and precise that it's hard not to partake in the guilty pleasures of the exercise.

Audience Reviews for Dumb and Dumber

An unpretentious comedy that never loses its fun and is non-stop laughs from beginning to end even after many viewings, relying on the hysterical raunchy humor that the Farrellys can get away with so well and on two amazing performances by Carrey and Daniels at their best.

"Dumb and Dumber" is about as passable as a kid cheating on a test in grade school. You may think you have a shot going in, but miraculously you pull off a B+. That is exactly what this film is. It is a character experiment about dumb characters getting into even dumber situations and how they overcome those obstacles with IQ's of 0. "Dumb and Dumber" pushes the limits of comedy in my opinion, because I do not believe that prior to your first viewing of this film, you would have any sense of just how gut-splittingly funny it would be. This film is by no means up with the greats of comedies, but I just have so much fun watching these guys do their thing and it shines off the screen. All "Dumb and Dumber" is, is a showcase for these actors to improv the hell out of these characters and they do so with no shame. This film succeeds at exactly what it tries to do and I laughed all the way through, but no, its not that great of a film at it's core.

Dumb is a complete understatement, Dumber still doesn't cut the grade.
