This movie is touted as an Older Gay man looking back at the choices in his life; So I though it would be seen through a Gay perspective. The films seems to be seen through a Heterosexual marriage values point of view. The Flash backs go to times when this gay man had a girlfriend and was not portrayed as a closeted Gay man, but rather as being straight, and happy with his girlfriend. The straight romantic flashbacks are more real, better defined and portrayed longer than the Gay romantic flashbacks, which are ambivalent, less expressive, and short. The negative Gay relationship flashbacks are portrayed in detail however. I found disturbing that this film suggests in subtle, and not so subtle ways that the main character -Bill- would have been happier had he chosen to lead a Heterosexual life. He's shown much happier with his girlfriend; The film Juxtaposes those happy times versus his Gay experiences which are destructive and include, alcohol, nicotine, and drug addition, physical abuse, etc. Bill is shown calling his former gay lover (who is now married with kids) to congratulate him for "being happy" in other words happiness is being a heterosexual married man; suggesting having a double life is preferable than being Gay and alone. Bill has a run in with his once girlfriend, who as it turns out, still loves him, but decided to marry another man because she got tired of waiting for Bill, and now She has a family and is not alone. As a Gay man I found this film to be like a Traditional marriage propaganda in the way heterosexual marriage is UNREALISTICALLY portrayed. Gay and Straight relationships can both be fraught, dysfunctional, and painful, or they could be happy and fulfilling. The plot had great potential. unfortunately it's clearly biased.
