The film spends too much time unfurling its central plot, and gives short shrift to its most compelling moments, which arrive when the audience is given the opportunity to understand the women who carry that plot forward.

Equity is a bizarre movie that manages the near-impossible feat of making a financial drama from an entirely female point of view without being in the slightest bit feminist.

Unlike The Big Short, it's not so much the system that's busted here but the people, women and men. The ending is perfect, and all too true.

Audience Reviews for Equity

"Money doesn't have to be a dirty word." Provocative and full of intrigue, Equity attempts to explore the Wall Street drama from a feminist perspective. The story follows an investment banker who's hired to take a privacy company public, but on the eve of its launch some discrepancies are discovered that threaten to cause the deal to fall through. The cast is decent enough but no one gives a particularly strong performance. And while the script does a pretty good job at building tension and suspense, it never really pays off with any big betrayals or reveals. Also, there's a lot of moral grayness and no clear-cut villains (rather different interests working against each other). A mediocre film, Equity is a little to plot heavy and its characters aren't very compelling.

The Naomi character might as well been Mrs. Gordon Gecko. This movie shows that woman can be as manipulative and successful in the financial arena as men but take it too personal. Gunn was not the right actor for this role. (9-13-16)
