It's hard not to leave First Cow feeling somewhat empty and underwhelmed, which is unfortunate given how layered and complex the film set out to be.

First Cow isn't a first choice film with wide appeal but it contains some smart choices and unique perspectives.

Reichardt films the workingmen's friendship and their frustrated strivings sympathetically, and observes with dismay the official's domineering ways and pretentious airs, but she reduces the protagonists to stick figures in a deterministic landscape.

The sense of a nascent community rising up out of the primordial muck is palpable, so it's unfortunate that John Magaro and Orion Lee's characters ultimately feel outside it all.

I could not make out much of the dialogue and a lot of it is so under-lit... There were gaps that I didn't follow. Plus, as someone who bakes, I had some questions. It just didn't win me over.

We sit and watch Reichardt play out her bitter thesis without being astonished.

Domesticated and wild in equal measure, this slow breeze of a film has kindness and tactility hanging from almost its every crumb.

If you think Westerns should be about gun battles and conquering frontiers, then First Cow is not the movie for you. Instead, the battles in this movie are more understated.

First Cow shows Kelly Reichardt at the height of her artistic and political powers, with supreme command over her own personal vision of American progress and its consequences.

The tone of First Cow is warm and fuzzy until the very end that watching it unfolds is like going through a soothing meditation.

There's a simple sense of thankfulness that a film this subdued and beautiful exists.

As she has with her previous films, genius writer/director Kelly Reichardt doesn't shout a thesis in your face or deeply probe a story for thematic insights. She just kinda pokes at themes with a stick. But it's such a lovely stick...

It's a tender, moving, painful depiction of friendship and classism and privilege and trust, and a film worth seeing in the theater.
