The voiceover (lifted from the book) is SO heavy handed and clunky it needs a dolly just to move it around.

V.C. Andrews' popular and creepy 1979 novel Flowers in the Attic gets no favors from the scriptwriters in this latest adaptation.

The problem is not that it's just terrible, but that it's also no fun. At all.

It was adapted into a middling creepy film in 1987. Now Lifetime has remade it as a sharper creepy TV movie.

I was particularly delighted when the children figured out that their mother was trying to kill them with powdered rat poison sprinkled on donuts, but this should all be a lot more frightening - or at least more unsettling - than it winds up being.

The problem is [it] always sounds like it's more fun, or at least more kooky, than it actually plays onscreen.

Audience Reviews for Flowers in the Attic

Yay! Finally this movie got made properly! I loved this book series growing up, and needless to say, I was disappointed in the 1987 version which messed up the ending. This is much more like it. Yes, it's a TV movie, but it doesn't shy away from things like the relationship between Cathy and Chris. Heather graham is very good as Corrine too. I hated her lol. The grandmother is a little more sympathetic here than she should be, it did put a different spin on it and made Corinne more the villain. I do have to admit the grandmother in the botched 87 version was the more accurate portrayal, but that's the only part I liked better. The grandmother here is interesting as she seems to have more layers, but the book grandmother was an out and out evil bitch. I'm looking forward to watching the sequel.

With a gripping, terrofying story, this new adaptation of V. C. Andrews' first novel gives um something you can't quite get because it repulses and the same time amazes you; despite the directing quality not being a match to the story (or even the script), the story is what marks this amazing movie/story.

An unsophisticated drag of a movie, even the acting talents do little to engage the audience!
