Friends With Benefits (2011)

Critic Consensus: Friends with Benefits adds nothing new to its well-worn rom-com formula, but the chemistry between Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis is almost enough to carry the movie by itself.

Movie Info

Dylan (Justin Timberlake) and Jamie (Mila Kunis) think it's going to be easy to add the simple act of sex to their friendship, despite what Hollywood romantic comedies would have them believe. They soon discover however that getting physical really does always lead to complications. -- (C) Sony

The plot is really just a rickety frame on which to hang cultural references. My God, the cultural references. Flash mobs! Street art! Smart phones! '90s nostalgia! Guerrilla advertising! iPads! Sexting!

These types of movies are going to keep coming out and there's just nothing we can do do about it.

Anyone who has ever seen a romantic comedy before knows where this one is going.

These smart actors are deconstructing their own glamour and seem far more scrumptious as a result.

September 9, 2011 | Rating: 3/5

You can tell this romantic comedy thinks it's a cut above from the way it keeps sniggering at the feebleness of other romantic comedies -- a risky strategy, as it turns out.

Audience Reviews for Friends With Benefits

All of the clichés you'd expect in a romcom, but roughly covered over with a patina of snappy patter to make it seem as if the whole concoction is a fresh thing. The chemistry between the leads add mucho spice too.

Guess it works well if you're in a mood for something light. Although the characters pretend to be anti-cliche, the movie gradually turns out to be an ordinary rom-com with a reasonable dose of cliches (thankfully, I was in a mood of overlooking them).

Although it is obvious where this film is going from the first scene they have together, it has its funnier moments. I think Woody Harrelson was the best of the supporting actors in his role as the gay sports writer.
