Movie Info

This adaptation of John O'Hara's From the Terrace stars Paul Newman as Alfred Eaton, an unhappily married financial adviser, while his real-life wife, Joanne Woodward, portrays Mary St. John, his promiscuous screen spouse. Mary's libertine behavior is a by-product of her husband's inability to express love and affection, a trait he has inherited from his cold-blooded father. Mark Robson directs and Myrna Loy heads up a large supporting cast as Newman's alcoholic mother. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

From The Terrace builds up to one big cliche.

Robson's film is still highly watchable, with Paul and Joanne pretending their marriage is on the rocks, and all sorts of machinations in the boardroom and the bedroom.

This is a handsome picture, well-performed and emotionally intriguing as it describes the rise of a young business man and the corrosive dead-lock of his loveless marriage.

A tolerable (if interminable) piece of mediocrity from 1960.

January 1, 2000

Another bulky novel, this one with a contemporary American locale, has been turned into a long, expensive movie - but the results are only occasionally absorbing.

Scintillates and wounds with the scale and ambition of a CinemaScope epic and the intimacy of an old school Hollywood weepie.
