Critic Reviews for Frozen

All Critics (250) | Top Critics (72)

I felt like Frozen was a mixed bag: not as bad as I feared it would be, but not as fun to watch as Tangled or as subversive as Brave.

... Frozen, the newest Disney contribution directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, falls a bit short.

The songs aren't good enough to stick in your head and the characters aren't good enough to be iconic, but Frozen is pleasant enough. May it have a long life on ABC Family, clogging up your weekend TV holiday schedule for years to come.

'Frozen' feels like it's breaking new ground in telling a story where the women are actually in control, and where the clichés of their narratives are turned inside out, almost as a sly commentary on what has come before.

The computer animation of the characters is expressive and detailed (we even notice the freckles on the shoulder of the heroine) while the film-makers work wonders with glacial landscapes in a land of "eternal winter."

Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee's extremely loose adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen strives to put a post-feminist spin on an archetypal Disney princess fantasy, with mixed success.

Everyone's children's favorite film works for grown-ups too. Mostly. There is a lot of singing and some of the songs are great, others feel a tad forced, though. The plot is surprisingly simplistic, but at least offers a surprise or two. The characters are likable enough and especially the snow man brings the best laughs. It's the artwork, scenery and landscapes that make this film's special atmosphere. Can't go wrong to have a nice afternoon with the kids with this.

A visually stunning Disney animation with wonderful songs and a story that boldly subverts the conventions of fairy tales by having no women in need of princes to rescue them - even though it could have done without a shocking, cliched revelation about a certain character in the last act.

It took me a while to get into this one and whilst the story is no masterpiece, musicals rarely are and it's actually a damned fine musical. It ain't the jazzy Disney of the mid 20th C. that we grew up on and not all songs work but those that do really make the movie. That and the catchphrases...
