Critic Reviews for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
Flip, glib and sophisticated, yet rump-slappingly bawdy and fast-paced, Forum is a capricious look at the seamy underside of classical Rome through a 20th-century hipster's shades.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is still a funny classic over 55 years later.
I have never seen a Plautus adaptation so this was great on that level, it really does feel like him in certain ways, while also feeling intensely and not too pleasantly of its time. Sondheim gives you clever lyrics throughout...
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a classic in its own right. The songs are fun and the story is unpredictable (even if it does occasionally meander for too long).
Humorous to an extent, but lacking the bang you might expect from a big screen musical.
Audience Reviews for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
Lester's mark on this comedy and the psychedelia of the 60's are definitely present. There are a lot of changes from the stage version of the musical comedy including that most of the songs have been cut. I saw this several years ago and didn't really appreciate the sense of humor. I recently was the assistant director for a production of this show at a community theater and I thought the stage play partly by Larry Gelbart had more potential. It is supposed to be a vaudevillian comedy based on the ancient comedies of Plautus. I re-watched this movie after the show was up and running. I liked it just a bit more than before, but my increase in laughs was more based on having spent the time rehearsing the play. To recognize some of the original lines that were kept and differences between our version and this wacky picture was my main source of enjoyment.
This movie is really very funny, much more so than I expected. The cast is great, but I really felt that Keaton needed a bigger role in the story. Anyway, the story is very interesting in a classical way, it's like something Shakespeare could have written. I liked this movie.
just-for-the-hell-of-it comedy with zero mostel mugging unmercilessly through the midsummer nights dream circumstances of a hapless slave seeking his freedom w/chicanery aforethought. the roman locale is only one superficiality of the story. yeah, it got laughs out of me. i didn't wanna, but they took 'em from me! it was a riot.
