Movie Info

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and-if he has his way-every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It's enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop...except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen's world apart. -- (C) Warner Bros

It's a lazy, watered down gangster flick that is not nearly as clever or as new as it attempts to be.

Gangster Squad is slight pulp fiction that offers all-out, balls-to-the-wall action riddled with as many clichés as bullets.

Those who are calling it shallow and cartoony and clichéd are missing the point. It is all of those things, purposefully - gleefully, even.

Gangster Squad looks the part, but it's so superficial it practically evaporates before our eyes.

Some of the clothes and makeup feel as glossy as paint, but, those aside, we seem to browsing through a display of secondhand goods.

"Gangster Squad" never stops reminding you that everyone in it thinks it's awesome that they're making it. You won't feel the same awe watching it.

Audience Reviews for Gangster Squad

½

This film just confirmed for me not to always listen to Rotten Tomato's reviews. The reviewers seem to feed off each other lately and not make reviews for themselves. This was a really entertaining film. It had a really good cast and a simple script. The level of violence is not for everyone, but the characters were great.

While the characters remain a tad underdeveloped, it is still fun to watch them take on Sean Penn as brutal mobster in 1940s LA. The squad consists exclusively of great actors and that helps connect more than their somewhat superficial character traits. The result is highly entertaining and offers plenty of action and style. That's more than enough for a pleasant movie night.

The direction is visually compelling and true to its time but the film doesn't have enough bullets to obtain this mob/gang/undercover police drama as a whole. Gangster Squad's clichés in plot and dialogue, as well as lackluster humor dwindles down the spark, even if its powerful all-star cast is a delight to see on screen. 2.5/5
