Struggling to get by, Clarabel Tilbee (Margaret O'Brien) and her grandmother, Miz (Charlotte Greenwood) are a Kentucky family who has fallen on hard times. However, Clarabel has a dream of racing her beloved horse in the Kentucky Derby, if only she can come up with the money for the entrance fee.
