Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Critic Consensus: Guardians of the Galaxy is just as irreverent as fans of the frequently zany Marvel comic would expect -- as well as funny, thrilling, full of heart, and packed with visual splendor.

Movie Info

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team-the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits-Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand-with the galaxy's fate in the balance. Critic Reviews for Guardians of the Galaxy

For much of its 122 minutes, Gunn's grab-bag of quirky characters, genre ribbing, and incongruent '70s pop tunes goes over like gangbusters. The trouble is, it's only irreverent to a point.

If Guardians of the Galaxy is an origin story, it is also a satire of the origin story, one that emphasizes the power of the "We" over that of the "Chosen One."

In proper "who gives a toss?" B-movie tradition, Guardians of the Galaxy takes us into the silly section of the Marvel Universe.

Guardians bounces with the energy of pure invention.

Blessed with a loose, anarchic B-picture soul that encourages you to enjoy yourself even when you're not quite sure what's going on, the scruffy Guardians is irreverent in a way that can bring the first Star Wars to mind.

The lightly derisive, live-action-cartoon tone robs the movie of any majesty, even of the comic-book type, and the many violent deaths of their suitable gravity.

Audience Reviews for Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians was a victim of hype for me. I wanted to see it in theaters because everyone was telling me how amazing it was, but I just never got to it. After watching it, I can say it is overrated but enjoyable. Most people told me it was the best Marvel film to date and I highly disagree. While the special effects and action are typically top notch, the story leaves alot to be desired. Characters motivations change in an instant and it is completely unbelievable. Obviously the characters themselves all have unique and interesting personalities and there's a couple memorable ones, but I found the film lacking the punch necessary to take it from good to great. I still prefer The Avengers or the first Iron Man as the top of the Marvel canon so far.

The type of irreverent Marvel superhero movie that we were all waiting for but haven't admitted yet, and it is a wonder to see how organically it combines a zany, quirky sense of humor with thrilling action and good unsentimental drama (like the awesome opening scene).

All around good sci-fi fun film. The pacing was a bit off and it seemed as though there were too many characters to follow along, but it is definitely worth watching.
