Gulliver's Travels (2010)

Critic Consensus: Though Jack Black is back doing what he does best, Gulliver's Travels largely fails to do any justice to its source material, relying instead on juvenile humor and special effects.

Movie Info

In a contemporary re-imagining of the classic tale, Gulliver, a big-talking mailroom clerk who, after he's mistakenly assigned a travel piece on the Bermuda Triangle, suddenly finds himself a giant among men when he washes ashore on the hidden island of Lilliput, home to a population of very tiny people. At first enslaved by the diminutive and industrious Liliputians, and later declared their hero, Gulliver comes to learn that it's how big you are on the inside that counts.

[A] dumb excuse for a movie.

As disinterested in itself as Gulliver's Travels seems to be, it's a wonder it ever came into existence at all.

Someplace, somewhere, Jonathan Swift is hanging his head in shame.

December 31, 2010 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…

While nobody would seriously expect Hollywood to honour Jonathan Swift's satirical fantasy, we might at least have hoped for a few decent gags.

There is laziness at every turn -- in the writing, in the acting, in the filmmaking. Don't reward these yahoos.

Audience Reviews for Gulliver's Travels

Unnecessary, preposterous, and hardly ever paying a homage to the original tale, this re-imagining of "Gulliver's Travels" is boring and stupid. Jack Black is just being himself in this film, and it seems like the filmmakers are hoping for that to carry the film, and honestly, as sad as it is, that is the best part about it. We are supposed to be told the backstory of these little people, but instead we are told the story from the perspective of Gulliver, which is much less interesting. The original cartoon showed depth in these miniature people and had you rooting for everyone, but in this film everyone is just "there" with nothing to do. The dialogue is laughable, the gags rely on todays technology, and the plot twists are very childish. This film is garbage, but I did admire the few winks it delivered!

Everyone who watched this movie expected something big out of it. Jack Black doing his trademark stuff with a bit of physical humour and a story that fitys him. Sounded absolutely great. But unfortunately it didn't do justice to the source material and the effects much like the story was flimsy and unconvincing.
