Critic Reviews for The Heartbreak Kid

[May] captures the implausibly boundless sense of wonder, possibility, and entitlement of a time when even a self-proclaimed schmuck like Len Cantrow, endowed with little but the gift of gab, attempted daring feats of self-liberation.

Elaine May's deft direction catches all the possibilities of young romance and its tribulations in light strokes and cleverly accents characterization of the various principals.
Wittily directed by May, and neatly scripted by Neil Simon.

Elaine May's The Heartbreak Kid was directed with a sure feeling for how comedy can edge over into satire and then tragedy.
A first-class American comedy, as startling in its way as was The Graduate.
The Heartbreak Kid is a gleefully comedic look at male logical fallacies and white ridiculousness as Lenny tries to extricate himself out of a situation he put himself in.
Audience Reviews for The Heartbreak Kid
As ruthlessly cynical as Simon's screenplay is, May's direction is the most subversive thing here. She forces the audience to slowly abandon all sympathy for these character so that by the end you're utterly relieved that no one is happy.

Tragicomic look at the trials and tribulations of love for young newlyweds. Poignancy and bitterness in constant balance.

I understand the story is realistic and it's supposed to be that real life kind of humor, but I just couldn't get into the movie. I found it boring and the actors pretty annoying too. Not a great movie at all.
